Benjamin Knapp (co-chair) Dr. Thomas L. Martin Dr. Aisling Kelliher Dr. Kresimir Matkovic (VRVis Center, Vienna, Austria) Abstract: External stimuli produce psychophysiological responses in people. However, causation between stimuli and responses is complex and difficult to pinpoint. Deep learning techniques are used to analyze big data and to develop models capable of understanding subtle features and patterns.They are used in affective computing to develop different models capable of detecting emotion based on labeled info. The problem with this approach is that the attached label defines the boundary of the data. For affective computing, such boundaries can vary heavily between people, as we perceive and feel our surroundings differently. We propose a systemic approach to explore the meaningfulness of labels by exploring the model's result in detail. Specifically, we analyze electro-dermal activity (EDA) and pulse-oximetar (POX) signals and use Emotion-in-Motion database as a case study. The database contains over 60,000 responses to audio stimulus. We start by classifying and clustering data using our pre-defined labels as our ground truth. The confusion matrix generated from the result will go through the report, response, and similarity analysis to explore what is causing such a result. By analyzing many different variations of labels, we can explore the practicability of different labels. The first half describes the iterative participatory design approach for assisting therapists, patients, and cyber-human agents in creating an ecosystem for capturing and analyzing human-movement performance for stroke survivors. I will present my research as a User Experience Engineer and Researcher, using qualitative and quantitative methods to understand the needs, pain points, and design implications for patients, therapists, and cyber-human agents. The primary contributions of this research include understanding how to use participatory design to support the capture of human movement performance. The broader impact of this work shows how interface design encourages reflection for users, how to create a framework that increases inter-rater reliability, how to develop reflective interfaces for understanding human-movement performance, and how to motivate users while improving adherence within the healthcare domain. Navigating through graduate school is a very challenging process and transition for many students. Graduate students suffer from high rates of social depression, anxiety, and fatigue. The Covid-19 pandemic has heightened these challenges due to many students feeling isolated. The second half of this talk aims to shed light on how best to navigate graduate school from the perspective of a current Ph.D. Candidate, as well as tips and tricks learned along the journey. *Bio:* Setor Zilevu is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech. His research focuses on healthcare, Human-Computer Interaction, and User Experience Research. His dissertation topic is creating a cyber-human approach for capturing and assessing human-movement performance. He is a 2x GEM Fellow and, after graduation, will be working at Facebook as a User Experience Researcher.
