Dear CS graduate students, This is a reminder that this coming Monday, March 1 is the last day that you can web drop a class. After Monday, you will have to submit a Course Withdrawal Request (attached) and get your professor’s signature. Also, a WG (Withdrawal Grade) will appear on your transcript. It won’t affect your GPA, but it will stay on your transcript showing that you withdrew from a class half-way through the semester. So, if you were planning on withdrawing from a class, please do it right away. If this is your only class and you wish to drop it, please contact your Program Coordinator (see list below). You’ll need to submit a Graduate Withdrawal/Resignation Form. Floyd Distinguished Chair in Engineering, UC Berkeley, http://goldberg.berkeley.edu Host: Prof. Ran Jin, ISE Zoom Link: https://virginiatech.zoom.us/j/86721802900 Abstract: Automation for manufacturing today is where computer technology was in the early 1960's, a patchwork of ad-hoc solutions lacking a rigorous scientific methodology. CAD provides detailed models of part geometry. What's missing is formal models of part behavior, frameworks for the systematic design of automated systems that can feed, assemble, and inspect parts. "Algorithmic Automation" introduces abstractions that allow the functionality of automation to be designed independent of the underlying implementation and can provide the foundation for formal specification and analysis, algorithmic design, and consistency checking. Algorithmic Automation can facilitate integrity, reliability, interoperability, and maintainability and upgrading of automation. Researchers are developing a variety of algorithmic models. I'll present results from my lab and others on specific problems in part feeding and fixturing, including a framework for fixturing deformable parts and new geometric primitives for vibratory bowl feeders, and propose open problems. Biography: Ken Goldberg is William S. Floyd Distinguished Chair in Engineering at UC Berkeley. He is a Professor of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR), with appointments in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science (EECS), Art Practice, the School of Information, and in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the UCSF Medical School. With his students and colleagues, Ken has published over 300 peer-reviewed technical papers on algorithms for robotics, automation, and social information filtering. Ken is Founding Director of UC Berkeley's Art, Technology, and Culture Lecture Series and Faculty Director of the CITRIS Data and Democracy Initiative. Ken earned dual degrees (summa cum laude) in Electrical Engineering and Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, and MS and PhD degrees from Carnegie Mellon University. Hope to see many of you there! —Doug Seminar: Visualization Design and Evaluation: on Flat Screens, in VR/AR and More Yalong Yang Postdoctoral Fellow, Harvard University Wednesday, February 24, 2021 9:30am-11:00am Zoom Only Abstract: Visualizations are tools that translate raw and complex data into meaningful graphics. They leverage human perception to summarize data in a cognitively efficient way, making them popular in science, analysis, and the media. Display capacity is an essential resource for designing visualizations. Different displays provide different capabilities in terms of how the data can be visually represented and how people can interact with visualizations. In this talk, I will present my experience in designing and evaluating novel visualizations on flat screens, in VR/AR, and in physical formats. I will focus in particular on VR/AR, which allows us to remove the boundaries of physical screens and envision dramatically new human-computer interaction experiences. I will first outline the unique features VR/AR provides for visualization design and then demonstrate how to utilize them to build novel and effective immersive visualizations. Finally, I will describe the vision of the future workspace, where people are primarily using VR/AR to see and interact with the digital world. I will discuss grand challenges for this future and conclude on an optimistic note: with deep integration between hardware, software, and user experience, we could achieve this vision in the near future. Biography: Yalong Yang is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Before joining Harvard University, he received his Ph.D. degree from Monash University, Australia, on a thesis titled “Visualising Geographically-Embedded Origin-Destination Flows: in 2D and immersive environments.” His research concerns many aspects of Visualization (VIS), Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), and VR/AR. He is especially interested in the emerging research topic — Immersive Analytics, which focuses on applying engaging, embodied display and interaction techniques (e.g., VR/AR) for data visualization and analytics. He has published 11 papers at top-tier visualization venues (IEEE VIS, ACM CHI, and EuroVis) and is an active member of these communities on promoting immersive analytics research.
