Sang Won Lee 08/12/2021, 3:00 PM https://virginiatech.zoom.us/j/82525669727 Title Evaluating Collaborative Cues for Affinity Diagramming Tasks in Augmented Reality Abstract This thesis documents the design and implementation of an augmented reality application that could be extended to support group brainstorming tasks remotely. Additionally, it chronicles our investigation into the helpfulness of traditional collaborative cues in this novel application of augmented reality. Users are able to interact with a familiar environment, where they can organize and manipulate virtual sticky notes around a central virtual board. We performed a user study, with each session requiring users to perform an affinity diagramming clustering task with and without common collaborative cues. Our results indicate that the presence or absence of cues has little effect on this task, or that other factors played a larger role than cue condition. However, our results also show that our application is usable, but that its usability could be improved. We conclude this document with a discussion of our results and the design implications that may arise from them.

Course Registration

Dear CS Graduate Students, When registering for courses, students should first enroll in a course for their campus (Blacksburg/NCR), prior to enrolling in a virtual course. If a student enrolls in a virtual course prior to enrolling in a campus (Blacksburg/NCR) course, their campus may automatically switch to virtual. When your campus switches to virtual, you will no longer be able to enroll in courses for your campus. You will receive a campus restriction error. To correct this, you must contact your Program Coordinator or Graduate School office to have your record changed from virtual back to your campus. Once your campus is switched back to your correct campus, you will be able to enroll in courses. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. To all Graduate Students with Assistantships, If you were told that you were going to receive an Assistantship (GTA or GRA) and have not received it as of today please don't panic I will get them done soon. But after today you will receive a late fee please do not worry the department will have the late fee waived. You will need to send me an email to let me know that you receive the late fee. Please to remember to pay your comprehensive fee if possible before the end of the day or sign up for the comprehensive fee payment plan. Also, you will not be dropped from your courses until next Friday so I still have time to enter your Assistantship before you are dropped. Your tuition will not be posted until I generate your Assistantship and it is posted to payroll. So please don't panic I am work very hard to get everything done before Friday August 19. Heath, Chandan Reddy *Abstract* A gene regulatory network (GRN) records the interaction among transcription factors and their target genes. GRNs are useful to study how transcription factors (TFs) control gene expression as cells transition between states during differentiation and development. Scientists usually construct GRNs by careful examination and study of the literature. This process is slow and painstaking and does not scale to large networks. In this thesis, we study the problem of inferring GRNs automatically from gene expression data. Recent data-driven approaches to infer GRNs increasingly rely on single-cell level RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) data. Most of these methods use unsupervised or association based strategies, which cannot leverage known regulatory interactions by design. To facilitate supervised learning, we propose a novel graph convolutional neural network (GCN)-based autoencoder to infer new regulatory edges from a known GRN and scRNA-seq data. As the name suggests, a GCN-based autoencoder consists of an encoder that learns a low-dimensional embedding of the nodes (genes) in the input graph (the GRN) through a series of graph convolution operations and a decoder that aims to reconstruct the original graph as accurately as possible. We investigate several GCN-based architectures to determine the ideal encoder-decoder combination for GRN reconstruction. We systematically study the performance of these and other supervised learning methods on different mouse and human scRNA-seq datasets for two types of evaluation. We demonstrate that our GCN-based approach substantially outperforms traditional machine learning approaches.

The result of this study will impact developers crafting and fixing regexes with ambiguities. It would be really helpful if you are available to participate in a 1-hour interview.
