Greetings CS grad students, You are invited to sign up for a unique graduate course I'm teaching this fall, CS 5734: Social Computing and CSCW. The course is focused on Social Computing (digital systems supporting online social interaction, from social media to multiplayer games) and CSCW (computer-supported cooperative work). This year's theme is “Investigative Technologies in Society.” As a student in this class, you will read, present, and discuss foundational HCI (human-computer interaction) research papers to build a strong understanding of topics like security and privacy, ethics, human-AI collaboration, and online communities. Students will work in groups on team-based projects analyzing, critiquing, and designing social technologies. You will also gain practical hands-on skills learning to conduct Open Source Intelligence (OSINT)<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-source_intelligence> investigations that use only publicly available information, techniques widely used for cybersecurity red-teaming, investigative journalism, crime solving, and human rights advocacy. Students taking the course will have the chance to earn the Virginia Tech OSINT Lab<https://hume.vt.edu/engagement/OSINTLab.html> digital credential. Furthermore, top-performing students will be well-prepared to apply for paid wage positions with the Virginia Tech OSINT Clinic in Spring 2026, where you can work on real-world investigations for social good. There are no formal prerequisites and space is still available in the course. The course is currently offered in-person in Alexandria and a virtual section for Blacksburg students will open shortly. If you are curious about the social implications of technology, security and privacy considerations, and/or digital investigations, I encourage you to sign up for CS 5734. Thomas received his BS in Electronics and Communication Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Calicut, India in 2010, his MS in Telecommunication Engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India in 2012, and his PhD from EURECOM, France in 2020. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Virginia Tech from 2022-2025. He is an incoming tenure track assistant professor at Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Worcester, MA, from Aug. 2025. His research interests include semantic communications, statistical signal processing, trustworthy and resilient AI and networks, and artificial general intelligence (AGI)-native wireless systems. At WPI, he will establish a research group dedicated to building Trustworthy, Resilient, Artificial Intelligence and Networks for next-generation networking and computing systems, called TRAIN Lab. From 2012 to 2014, he was a staff design engineer on 4G LTE with Broadcom communications, Bangalore, and from 2014 to 2017, he was a design engineer with Intel corporation, Bangalore. During November 2020 till June 2022, he was a staff engineer on 5G modems with wireless research and development division of Qualcomm Inc., Espoo, Finland. He was a recipient of the best student paper award at IEEE SPAWC 2018, Kalamata, Greece, best paper award at IEEE ICSCC 2025, and received third prize for his team titled "Learned Chester" ML5G-PHY channel estimation challenge, as part of the ITU AI/ML in 5G challenge, conducted at NCSU, US, 2020. Date: Thursday, August 14, 2025 Time: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM (EST) Title: CancerSubtyper: A Web-Based Deep Learning Platform for Cancer Subtyping Through DNA Methylation Data Location: Online only Zoom Link: https://virginiatech.zoom.us/j/4349038887 Committee: Professor Liqing Zhang (Chair, Virginia Tech) Professor Chang-Tien Lu (Virginia Tech) Professor Na Meng (Virginia Tech) Abstract: This thesis presents CancerSubtyper, a web-based platform for deep learning-based cancer subtyping using DNA methylation data. The platform integrates BCtypeFinder for supervised subtype prediction and CancerSubminer for semi-supervised subtype discovery or refinement within an automated workflow that requires no programming expertise. Users can upload labeled or unlabeled datasets, after which the system performs preprocessing, batch effect correction, and subtype analysis, providing results through interactive visualizations including UMAP projections, heatmaps, boxplots, and Kaplan–Meier survival curves. This work evaluates CancerSubtyper on The Cancer Genome Atlas breast cancer cohort and demonstrates its ability to recover distinct subtypes, correct for batch effects, and reveal clinically relevant differences in patient survival. The results demonstrate that the platform delivers accurate, interpretable, and reproducible subtyping analyses, lowering the barrier for researchers to conduct large-scale methylation-based cancer studies.
