Location: Princeton, NJ Department: Data Science and System Security Description: The Data Science team aims to build novel big data solutions and service platforms that simplify complex systems management, and to develop new information technology that supports innovative applications, from big data analytics to the Internet of Things. Our research is both experimental and theoretical, covering many domains in data science and artificial intelligence such as time series analysis, graph mining, NLP and document understanding, and so on. The goal of our research is to fully understand the dynamics of big data from complex systems and build innovative solutions to help end user managing those systems. We have built a number of analytic engines and system solutions to process and analyze big data and support various applications in detection, prediction and optimization. Our research leads to both award-winning NEC products and publications in top conferences. Our group is looking for researchers to work in the areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning or data mining. The ideal candidates must have expertise in one of the above areas and can develop algorithms to analyze massive data and build innovative applications. Folks, You may have noticed that this year’s SARs include a new section: the Individual Development Plan (IDP). As a new requirement, the IDP has raised many questions and uncertainties. To help clarify the process, Dean Suprenant will be leading an IDP workshop on April 2nd—just five days before the SAR deadline. If you're unsure how to complete your IDP, this session will be a great opportunity to get guidance and ask questions. See below for more details. Best, Dr. T. “Detective for an Hour!” Participants Needed for Mixed Reality User Study

Hello everyone, The 3D Interaction (3DI) group is inviting you to participate in a research study with Meta Quest Pro. Our team is investigating ways to enhance sensemaking activities, such as intelligence analysis with immersive technologies. Participants in the study will come to Room 3215, Gilbert Place, 220 Gilbert St, Blacksburg, VA 24060. Participants will be given a case file involving a hypothetical nationwide terrorist attack. The participants will try to solve the case with 3D interaction techniques while seated, standing, or moving around in an indoor area. The entire experimental session will take about 75-90 minutes. Participation is entirely voluntary. Student Activity Reports & Annual Evaluation: SAR Due April 7

Welcome to the 2025 annual evaluation process for computer science graduate students! This information primarily applies to MS and PhD students. MEng students follow a different evaluation process. Each year, all MS and PhD students in Computer Science are required to submit a Student Activity Report (SAR). Faculty advisors review these reports and provide written evaluations that students can access. The Graduate Program Committee (GPC) conducts a final review on Reading Day ("Green Thursday"), after which students receive additional feedback. Submitting Your SAR Graduate students must complete their SAR by logging into <https://gpc.cs.vt.edu> https://gpc.cs.vt.edu and selecting "Submit SAR" or "Edit Current SAR" from the "SAR" menu. * Deadline for students: April 7, 2025 * Deadline for faculty evaluations: April 15, 2025 (faculty will receive further instructions before April 7) What's New This Year? This year's SAR includes three new fields as part of the Individual Development Plan (IDP), designed to help students reflect on their academic and career growth: 1. Educational Goals 2. Career Exploration 3. Professional Development These fields appear at the very end of the SAR and should be completed as part of the submission process. Who Must Submit? * All enrolled MS and PhD students, regardless of semester standing. * Students scheduling their final exam this spring must submit their SAR before receiving approval to schedule their exam. * Accelerated UG/G MS students (who have not yet received their undergraduate degree) should submit a SAR to stay on track with their program timeline. * Students transitioning between MS and MEng programs should submit a SAR for the degree they are switching to, regardless of their current official status. If considering a switch, please aim to finalize the paperwork before April 7. SAR Form Updates & Key Points This year's SAR form is mostly unchanged from last year, except for the new IDP section. You can upload last year's report and simply update your information. Important reminders: * Every milestone must be marked as completed or planned (semester listings alone may be unclear). * Funding sources must be indicated for each term in the program: * Self-funded: If you (or your family) paid tuition, specify if you worked full-time. * Government/Company/Fellowship-funded: Indicate the source. * Graduate Research Assistant (GRA): Note your advisor. * Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA): Note the course you assisted with. Participants Needed for Augmented Reality Research User Study

Hello everyone, The 3D Interaction group is inviting you to participate in a research study with mixed reality (MR) technologies. This study compares various methods of interaction with virtual data and information in Magic Leap 2 AR Headset. Participants in the study will come to Room 3215, Gilbert Place, 220 Gilbert St, Blacksburg, VA 24060. Participants will try out several interaction techniques while seated, standing, or moving around in an indoor area. The entire experimental session will take about 75-90 minutes. Participation is entirely voluntary. Participants need to be English speakers, at least 18 years old, and have normal vision or corrected vision with contact lenses (Glasses are not supported). Participants should not have any symptoms or known recent exposure to COVID-19 or other infectious diseases. Participation will be on a first come first serve basis.
