Grad Program Announcements

A bunch of things to announce in preparation for classes starting next week! *Course seats added*: We have managed to do a few last-minute things to help folks out with class availability. * Added an online section of CS5764 Information Visualization. Lots of seats are available! * Force-added a lot of people to CS5254 (Mobile) and CS5664 (Social Media Analytics). Please note that these courses both have a "shadow" section with a separate CRN number for another program. It might look like there are seats available in those sections, but there are not. We are overloading the CS sections to bring the total number up to course capacity, but you probably can't see that part. We will adjust course caps within the next few days to let people self-register if there are seats available. * Added a new section of CS5934 in Blacksburg. Alexis is working with the students who need that to graduate. *Force Add Form is Closed:* We are going to manage force-add needs a bit differently for the rest of this Spring cycle. In particular, we will soon open any seats that we are holding for emergency situations in certain classes. This means that if you want a class, you will have to see a free slot open on the timetable and grab it yourself. We seem to be reaching a point where there is a reasonable turnover in most classes, except for a small number that are hugely popular. It is never possible to accommodate everyone in every class. Note that I am still trying to add people to classes who previously submitted a force-add request. Also note that a lot of prior requests were not honored because the person in question already had a full schedule and did not provide a course to drop in place of the one requested. *How to request a force-add*: We are still managing force-adds on a limited basis. We WILL NOT handle force add requests on the basis of a course being full. But we WILL accept force-add requests for two situations: 1) A person is graduating this semester and can justify why a particular class is required to graduate. 2) A person is unable to add a class themselves due to something like a level restriction, etc., that is out of their control. Mostly, that would apply to UGG students. In those cases, you can send email requesting a force-add as follows: * CS5024 and CS5934 requests should go to Alexis Snyder <asnyder017(a)vt.edu>. * Requests for other courses can come to me. Note that if you have a full schedule (4 courses for MEng, 3 for MS/PhD, 2 for students on assistantship), then you will have to also provide a course to drop in place of the one you wish to add. *Hoarding Issues:* A major reason why classes are so full is because some people register for more classes than they intend to take, which blocks others from getting seats in popular classes. We understand that many would like to attend a range of courses before finally deciding which to take, but we don't have the capacity to let people do this through hoarding extra course registrations. So we have contacted a number of people, and removed some from classes when absolutely necessary. This has helped to open seats in several classes. *Dr. Shaffer's Office Hours:* Starting this Monday (1/15), I will hold office hours on Mondays and Thursdays at 2:00, Zoom https://virginiatech.zoom.us/j/86385153941. Here are two resources that can help. * https://website.cs.vt.edu/research/research-areas.html: This has links to the pages describing the major departmental research areas. Those pages in turn list the faculty who align with each of the areas. That might help you pick faculty who share your interests. * It helps to know how receptive a given faculty member is likely to be about hearing from students who want to join their group. Some faculty have all the students that they can handle already. Some are retiring and not taking on students. Some are actively trying to grow their group. Usually, you can't tell without a guide. This is a reminder that *New Grad Student Orientation *will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, January 10 at 2:00-4:00. This is especially important for UGGs who will be entering the MS or PhD program.
