March 17 and 18: CS Grad Student "Industry Insights and Career Readiness" Events
Dear CS Graduate Students (MEng, MS, and Ph.D.): We hope you will join us for the inaugural "Industry Insights and Career Readiness" events taking place at the Innovation Campus in Alexandria, VA, on March 17 and 18. Please see the attached flyer for more information. Representatives from Bloomberg, NASK, and GEICO will be present to share information and insights about their companies, projects, and hiring choices ... And they are eager to answer any questions you may have about the next steps in your career! Additionally, Dr. Suzanne Shelburne, the Associate Director of Career Exploration and Access--Graduate Student Engagement in the Office of Career and Professional Development at Virginia Tech will be offering the following workshops in ICAB 3130: Resume Writing Essentials Tuesday, March 18, 10:00-10:50 AM Having a well-polished resume is a critical step toward getting an interview. This workshop will provide tips for crafting an effective resume and include information on Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). Additionally, you'll get an introduction to VMock, a tool that provides AI-generated feedback to help you refine your resume even further. Navigating Behavioral Interviews Tuesday, March 18, 11:00-11:50 AM This workshop discusses the interview process and provides basic interview tips. You will learn how to prepare effectively for interviews, ensuring you present your best self to potential employers. The session also explains the STAR format, which provides a framework for answering many behavioral questions. Job Search Strategies Tuesday, March 18, 12:00-12:30 PM This workshop provides an overview of key steps, best practices, and effective strategies for the job search. You'll learn how to conduct a gap analysis, use generative AI to identify possible employers, and explore job search platforms like Career Shift and GoinGlobal. Additionally, the session will discuss how to identify employers that hire or sponsor international professionals.
