Hey everyone!
I created a Discord server in the VT student hub specifically for computer
science graduate students and our cohort. Here’s the invite link if
anyone’s interested:
https://discord.gg/BmYSstwG
I’ll beef this up this weekend with more channels and voice rooms.
There’s also a more general computer science server geared towards the
undergrads in the student hub as well if you're interested in checking that
out.
Thanks!
Connor Hasson
As you get ready to either start or continue your graduate studies at VT, here are some important dates and information about the Course Request window for Fall 2022.
Fall 2022 Course Request:
The Fall 2022 Course Request window is scheduled (per the Academic Calendar<https://www.registrar.vt.edu/dates-deadlines/academic-calendar/2021-2022.ht…>) to open Thursday, March 22nd and is available through Thursday, April 5th in HokieSpa<http://hokiespa.vt.edu>. The points below will help you with navigating this process.
What is Course Request?
Course Request is a period in the middle of each semester during which you are permitted to request courses for the next term. This does not mean that you can request for a course of your choice to be added to the schedule of classes.
So I'm registering for classes, right?
Yes and No. Right now you are submitting a request to the registration system to [hopefully] be registered for the course(s) you would like to take for the Fall 2022 term. If there are enough seats for everyone requesting the course, then you are in. But when there are more people requesting than there are seats, the results of the process are random (i.e., no first come; first awarded practice) and there are no guarantees that you will be registered for the course(s) you submit in course request. The CS Department and its directors and coordinators have no control over the process.
How does Course Request Work?
A How-To Guide and video are available on this website<https://www.universitystudies.vt.edu/how-to/hdi-course-request.html>. Note that while it is intended for an undergraduate audience, the concept is still the same and applicable to Graduate Students. We highly recommend reviewing the short video provided.
When will I know the results of my Course Request?
The results of the Course Request process are usually available three weeks after the close of the Course Request window which is Thursday, April 5th. You should know the results of your Course Request submission by the time the Drop/Add window opens in late April.
What CS classes are offered?
The full list of courses "on the books" can be found at https://cs.vt.edu/Graduate/Courses.html.
However, the actual courses being offered in a given semester is found at the Virginia Tech Timetable of Courses: http://apps.es.vt.edu/ssb/HZSKVTSC.P_DispRequest. Note that "Course Request" does not mean that you have an opportunity to request that a course be taught that is not on the timetable.
What if I missed Course Request?
The second stage of course registration is the online Drop/Add period, which begins in late April. More details on the Fall 2022 Drop/Add window and the Fall 2022 Force Add process will be communicated at a later date.
If I will have future opportunities to get registered for a course, then why should I bother with Course Request now?
Our course capacities depend in part on how many people request them during Course Request. If we see that a course is more popular than expected, this gives us a chance to adjust. Otherwise, you might not be able to get into the course later because we didn't know that more seats were needed.
