Updates/Reminders to Fall Registration - includes Department Limits on Course Registration

Below are a few updates/reminders on fall registration. You will see some of these messages again throughout the summer. Add/Drop Window for Fall 22 Registration * Unlike previous years, the add/drop window for Fall 22 registration will run all summer long until the last day to add which is currently slated for August 26th (roughly four months out). * This means you'll be able to adjust your schedule on your own in HokieSpa throughout the summer. * This *only* applies to graduate students at VT. Department Limits on Course Registration Please remember the following department limits on course registration: * Students on assistantship: 2 regular courses * Other MS/PhD: 3 regular courses * MEng: 4 regular courses "Regular" courses do not include CS 5944 Graduate Seminar or CS 5994/7994 research hours. A number of students who signed up for extra classes may have done so thinking they need the class credits to meet the total minimum requirements (e.g., to meet full time status or assistantship status). All students can take CS 5994 and CS 7994 research hours. There is no limit to how many of these you can take. So if you are having trouble with dropping a course due to a minimum hours restriction, then just sign up for (or increase your number of) research hours to get to the credit total that you need. To adjust the number of credits for research hours, please see this email that was sent on Monday, April 25th: http://mailman.cs.vt.edu/pipermail/gradstudents/2022-April/000788.html So what if I'm not in compliance with the Department Limits on Course Registration? (see above) We will be running reports all summer long (every few weeks to be exact) to ensure that everyone is in compliance. If you don't want to be on that report, please drop the extra classes soon. You can expect that we will remove people from courses that are full to free seats for those on the force add request list.

Instruction on how to add more than 1 credit hour of Research hour

If you are having trouble adding more than 1 credit of research hours I have attached a screen shot of registration page to go add more than 1 credit hour. Please find attached screenshots for registering more than 1 credit hour. Basically, you need to click on the "schedule and options" as shown in the screenshot attached. That allows you to modify the number of credit hours. As we get ready for the opening of the Fall 22 add/drop window we want to share with you a few reminders. Add/Drop Window for Fall 22 Per the Academic Calendar<https://www.registrar.vt.edu/dates-deadlines/academic-calendar/2021-2022.ht…> the add/drop window for Fall 22 is slated to open at 8 p.m. ET on Friday, April 22nd. Keep checking the Academic Calendar<https://www.registrar.vt.edu/dates-deadlines/academic-calendar/2021-2022.ht…> in case they make any changes. Last year, they opened the portal early. Force Adds for Fall 22 We continue to revise and improve our force add process for Fall 22 which includes a landing page for you to review prior to submitting your force add request. Please take a moment to review the Force Add website<https://cs.vt.edu/Graduate/grforceadd.html>. Please pay particular attention to the rules section and reasons why your request might not be processed. When does the Force Add Form open? The Force Add Form will open at 12 noon ET on Monday, April 25th on the Force Add website<https://cs.vt.edu/Graduate/grforceadd.html>. Please note that this is a Google Form so you will need to use your VT Google Credentials to access the form. Do Not Submit MIT CRNs The following courses and CRNs are meant for students who are in the Master of Information Technology (MIT) program. Please do not submit a force add request for the following: * CS 5244 - Web Application Development - 83402 * CS 5644 - Machine Learning with Big Data - 83421 Courses Not Eligible for Force Add for Fall 22 The following courses will not be eligible for force adds. * CS 5254 - Mobile Application Development - 90895 * We will provide this course again in the spring 23 term and everyone who wants should be able to get a seat then. * CS 5914 - Software Project Management - 91526 * This course is not a required course and it has limited capacity. We cannot accommodate additional students beyond the cap, so we are not going to manage this course via force-add. * CS 5934 - MENG Capstone Course - all sections * NCR students will get into the NCR section. * Blacksburg students will have plenty of capacity between the two sections available, however, you just might not get your first choice. You will need to monitor the Timetable of Classes<https://apps.es.vt.edu/ssb/HZSKVTSC.P_ProcRequest> for a possible drop to get a seat in the course or pick another section where appropriate. How soon will I find out about my request? For most requests, our goal is for a two business day turnaround time for a decision or update, but we ask for your patience with this process.
