important CS faculty survey to inform vision setting: response requested by June 25
by Cal Ribbens 23 Jun '21

23 Jun '21
Dear Colleagues, I hope that the summer season is off to a good start for you. You may recall that in my end-of-semester email I said that our two big themes for this coming year will be: 1. Reconnect and (re-)build community. 2. Envision and aspire. #2 involves an important discussion we have just begun about a department vision statement, strategic planning, and what we aspire to be and do over the next 5-10 years. Some of you will groan at the request for yet another survey. But I hope and request that you find 30 minutes of quiet reflection time to share your thoughts to the open-ended questions in this survey: https://virginiatech.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_7QD3XtjVHVJy6xg I believe it is a great exercise for all of us --- from the most seasoned to our newest colleagues --- to think about what CS is and could be, as a discipline and an academic unit. The stakes are high: for each of us individually and for the impact we can have together on our field and on the world. The most important predictor of the success of our vision is aligning it with the passion and conviction and aspirations of our faculty. So that's what this is about. We ask that you respond by June 25. Thank you! Cal -- Head, Department of Computer Science Virginia Tech https://cs.vt.edu/People/Faculty/cal-ribbens.html https://twitter.com/CalRibbens_VTCS
