Hi All, I hope everyone's semester is going well so far. Our first faculty meeting of the semester will be Friday, September 27 at 12:00 - 1:30 pm. Zoom Link: https://virginiatech.zoom.us/j/87874001510 Physical Location: D&DS 450 Title: Hierarchy Aligned Commonality Through Prototypical Networks: Discovering Evolutionary Traits over Tree-of-Life Committee: Dr. Lynn Abbott (committee chair) Dr. Anuj Karpatne (co-chair) Dr. Creed Jones Abstract: A grand challenge in biology is to discover evolutionary traits, which are features of organisms common to a group of species with a shared ancestor in the Tree of Life (also referred to as phylogenetic tree). With the recent availability of large-scale image repositories in biology and advances in the field of explainable ML such as ProtoPNet and other prototype-based methods, there is a tremendous opportunity to discover evolutionary traits directly from images in the form of a hierarchy of prototypes learned at internal nodes of the phylogenetic tree. However, current prototype-based methods are mostly designed to operate over a flat structure of classes and face several challenges in discovering hierarchical prototypes on a tree, including the problem of learning over-specific features at internal nodes in the tree. To overcome these challenges, we introduce the framework of Hierarchy aligned Commonality through Prototypical Networks (HComP-Net), which learns common features shared by all descendant species of an internal node and avoids the learning of over-specific prototypes. We empirically show that HComP-Net learns prototypes that are accurate, semantically consistent, and generalizable to unseen species in comparison to baselines on 190 species of birds, 38 species of fishes and 30 species of butterflies. While we focus on the biological problem of discovering evolutionary traits, our work can be applied to any domain involving a hierarchy of classes. Hello, The Amazon - Virginia Tech Initiative for Efficient and Robust Machine Learning<https://amazon.cs.vt.edu/> will be hosting its Fall 2023 Retreat on Thursday, Oct. 3 in Blacksburg, at the Virginia Tech Inn. We plan to have a student poster session at 3-4 pm, with the opportunity to talk/network with Amazon researchers. Posters are invited from all aspects of AI and Machine Learning. Projects in NLP, large language models, human-AI interfaces, conversational AI, federated learning are especially encouraged. If you would like to be considered, please email me your poster as a PDF by Friday, Sept. 20. Your poster should be 24 inches wide by 36 inches tall. If selected, please make arrangements to get your poster printed in time. I believe each department provides printing services to students. CS students can email techstaff(a)cs.vt.edu<mailto:techstaff@cs.vt.edu> to get their posters printed. We will mount your poster onto a foam board the morning of the event to be displayed on an easel. We will be providing the foam board and the easel. Additionally, you can apply for a travel grant to attend the event along with your poster submission. The Somali speech in this release represents that spoken in the Northern and Benaadir dialect regions of Somalia. Please sign and return the attached Agreement that applies to your organization, either the (FP) For-Profit or (NFP) Not-For-Profit version. LDC2024S11, L2-KSU Native and Non-Native Arabic Speech L2-KSU Native and Non-Native Arabic Speech contains approximately six hours of Modern Standard Arabic read speech from 80 subjects, along with transcripts and speaker metadata. The speech data was collected in 2022 from 40 native and 40 non-native speakers. Native speakers were from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Palestine.
