Cancer isn’t a single disease; it’s a process of evolution within our bodies. At this month’s Science on Tap, participants will use a dice-based game to see evolution in action — watching genetic changes accumulate over time. You'll then piece together how cancer evolves, using the same reasoning scientist's use to uncover cancer's evolutionary history. The Hand-Me-Down offers students and staff members with children ages 0-10 the opportunity to "shop" for a wide range of children's clothes and other items they may need, free of charge. The event takes place in the multi-purpose room of the Graduate Life Center. If you have items for donation, they are being excepted now through 5:00pm on November 10, you can drop off donated items at the Women's Center (206 Washington Street) or at the front desk of the Graduate Life Center. Organizers have also created an Amazon wish list for people who wish to purchase items for donation. "Polymer Characterization: Measures Linked to Product Performance and Current Challenges for Innovation" Jackie Thomas, PhD Principal Scientist The Procter & Gamble Company 4-5 PM, Monday Oct 27th Kelly Hall Room 310 There are various phases for characterization of polymers, from Discovery and Synthesis, to Use and Performance, to End of Life. Each phase may need different levels of characterization. Various analytical measurement techniques are available to support the different phases from bulk measures to high end measures that push the limits of detection. Highlighted will be real examples from P&G focused on Use and Performance showcasing the Analytical Tools used detection, visualization, and recycled packaging. Additionally, current challenges in characterization, such as polymers are often not pure single molecules, but made up of a mixture of like molecules will also be discussed. Two approaches will be highlighted towards creating "polymer standards" for better fingerprinting of industrial relevant polymers. Jackie Thomas, PhD, is currently a Principal Scientist in the Corporate Research organization at P&G. She joined P&G in 2008 and currently focuses on materials characterizations, complex mixture analysis, and polymer characterization primarily using NMR spectroscopy. She earned a Ph.D. Degree in Physical Organic Chemistry from Texas A&M University and a B.S. Degree in Chemistry from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Jackie is very active with ACS, served as Chair of the Local Cincinnati Section in 2016, currently a member of the Polymer Division Industrial Advisory Board, and newly elected as Chair-Elect for the Analytical Division 25/26. As of 2025, she is also a board member of Macromolecules Innovation Institute (MMI) External Advisory Board at Virginia Tech. However, in resource-constrained environments, where both data and compute are limited, traditional one-ML-model-fits-all approaches fall short for detecting cyber attacks. In this talk, we argue for a dynamic, adaptive framework in which multiple models are trained, selectively deployed based on available resources, and continuously updated to withstand adversarial attacks and respond to rapidly changing environments. We will present our current work toward realizing this vision and highlight how such an approach can enable resilient, efficient, and mission-ready AI at the edge for protecting against cyberattacks. Bio: Murat Kantarcioglu is a Professor and CCI Faculty Fellow at the Virginia Tech Department of Computer Science. He earned his PhD in Computer Science from Purdue University in 2005, where he was awarded the Purdue CERIAS Diamond Award for Academic Excellence. He also holds affiliations as a Faculty Associate at Harvard’s Data Privacy Lab and as a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley’s RISE Labs. Dr. Kantarcioglu’s research centers on integrating cybersecurity, data science, and blockchain technologies to develop secure and efficient data processing and sharing mechanisms. His research has been supported by numerous grants from agencies such as NSF, AFOSR, ARO, ONR, NSA, and NIH. Dr. Kantarcioglu has authored over 180 peer-reviewed papers in top-tier venues including NDSS, CCS, USENIX Security, KDD, SIGMOD, ICDM, ICDE, PVLDB, and several IEEE/ACM Transactions. He has also served as Program Co-Chair for prestigious conferences such as IEEE ICDE, ACM SACMAT, IEEE Cloud, IEEE CNS, and ACM CODASPY. His research has been featured by media outlets such as the Boston Globe, ABC News, PBS/KERA, and DFW Television, and he has received multiple best paper awards. Dr. Kantarcioglu is the recipient of several awards, including the NSF CAREER Award, the AMIA 2014 Homer R. Warner Award, and the IEEE ISI 2017 Technical Achievement Award, jointly presented by the IEEE SMC and IEEE ITS societies, for his contributions to data security and privacy.
