Hi All, Twenty-three graduate students from programs across Virginia Tech’s colleges and campuses make up the latest cohort of Graduate School student ambassadors. From: Kenneth Wong <khwong(a)vt.edu> Sent: Wednesday, October 6, 2021 11:35 PM To: nvc-g(a)vt.edu Subject: Mask reminders for the NVC Hello all, The university's mask policy is unchanged from the start of the semester, and masks are required when in any public space inside the building. This includes common areas like classrooms, kitchens, elevator lobbies, bathrooms, the community cafe, or the 2nd floor lounge in T-2. Because we have multi-purpose spaces, exceptions are made when one is actively eating in spaces like the cafe. But the expectation is that as soon as you are done eating, the mask goes back on. We've had several reports of unmasked people playing ping-pong in the cafe. Just to be completely clear, this is not allowed. Please be sure to convey this message to the students in your programs. Thanks for your attention to this important public health concern. COVID cases appear to be in decline in many areas; let's keep up the good work and continue that trend. -Kenneth -- Kenneth H. Traian Traian Iliescu Professor Department of Mathematics Virginia Tech https://sites.google.com/view/iliescu ============================================================ Dear Students, Next semester I will teach the following special topics course: MATH-5414 (17197) "Reduced Order Models (ROMs) for Fluid Flows" Below, you can find a description of the course. I'm also attaching the syllabus. The web course request is available from October 19 to November 2. Hope to see many of you in my class next semester! ============================================================ Course Goals and Objectives: This course is a general introduction to reduced order modeling of fluid flows. It focuses on both mathematical and computational topics. The main goal is to provide a research playground for students interested in using reduced order modeling in the numerical simulation of fluid flows and other nonlinear systems. The objectives are: (1) to introduce the basic mathematical and computational tools used in nonlinear reduced order modeling; (2) to help students in their research. At the end of the course, every student should be able to: (i) develop a reduced order model for building block partial differential equations; and (ii) analyze the resulting reduced order model. Students in mathematics, engineering, geosciences, and computer science are strongly encouraged to take this course. This course introduces students to the reduced order modeling of fluid flows. Assuming minimal background, the course emphasizes the strong connection among the modeling, analysis, and computations of various reduced order modeling approaches for engineering and geophysical flows. The course is divided into two main areas: fluids and reduced order models (ROMs). Topics in the fluids area include the Navier-Stokes equations and the quasi-geostrophic equations (QGE), as well as building block systems (e.g., the Poisson, heat, convection-diffusion, Stokes, and Burgers equations). The connections of these equations to the physical and computational worlds are emphasized. Topics in the ROM area include the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD), and the reduced basis method (RBM) for parameterized systems. Both the development and the numerical analysis of these methods are covered. Finally, these different ROMs are used for an efficient and relatively accurate numerical simulation of realistic engineering and geophysical flows. A particular emphasis will be on ROMs for turbulent flows and enabling methodologies (e.g., stabilization and closure modeling). Prerequisites: Basic background in partial differential equations and numerical methods. Students should be able to use a programming language (such as MATLAB, FORTRAN, or C) to complete their computational assignments. Yee, an avid supporter of the arts, Gordon Yee and the Virginia Tech School of Performing Arts are pleased to announce the first annual Yee Prize student composition competition. All undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at Virginia Tech, regardless of degree or school, are encouraged to submit their best music composition, in any genre or medium. A panel of composition faculty and the winning composer of the Yee Memorial Commission will adjudicate submissions and select the top three student works. The student composers of the top three works will receive $500, $250, and $100 and a certificate presented at the premiere of the Yee Memorial Commission and their pieces will be posted on the Yee Memorial webpage.
