Honghu %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% *Course*: Stochastic Dynamics (Math-5414 CRN 21182) *Instructor*: Honghu Liu (hhliu(a)vt.edu <mailto:hhliu@vt.edu>) *Time*: Tuesday & Thursday, 2:00-3:15 *Description*: Nonlinearity and randomness are two essential components in the modeling of many complex phenomena arising from science and engineering applications. This course will provide a broad introduction to the actively evolving field of nonlinear stochastic dynamics, focusing on both the basic mathematics and important computational tools in the study of such systems. The content will include basic concepts of Probability; Brownian motion; stochastic differential equations and related numerical simulation techniques; concepts from chaotic dynamics such as Lyapunov exponents, strange attractors and routes to chaos; and data analysis tools for parameter estimation and data assimilation including various regularization techniques, the ensemble Kalman filter, and variational methods. The course material will be largely self-contained. It will also feature a variety of concrete examples and many hands-on opportunities related to the above topics. Tips for course selection for Spring 2022

This email is mainly meant for MEng students, but MS students might find some of it helpful as well. Read the comment section of a CRN on the timetable carefully, before requesting or registering for that CRN. 1- During Course Request period, you can only request courses that are on the timetable of classes and have an active CRN. This process is not about requesting for courses to be added to the timetable. It is simply a pre-registration process to give you priority to get into courses. So you can treat it like an early registration, before add/drop period opens up in November. 2- CS students should not register for the below CRNs, as these CRNs are restricted to MIT majors and MIT graduate certificate only. Please read the comment section carefully. CRN: 13414 CS-5254 Mobile Application Development CRN: 13433 CS-5664 Social Media Analytics CRN: 13434 CS-5704 Software Engineering Instead, you should sign up for the below CSA version of these courses: CRN: 21613 CS-5254 Mobile Application Development CRN: 21614 CS-5664 Social Media Analytics CRN: 21612 CS-5704 Software Engineering (There is also an in-person version of this course in Blacksburg and that CRN is also open to CSA students) 3- CS5814: Introduction to Deep Learning and CS6524: Deep Learning are more or less the same course. CS5814 is offered by our department and CS6524 is offered by the ECE department. You can’t get credit for both of these courses on your Plan of Study. CS students are advised to take the CS department version which is CS5814. 4- MEng students are discouraged from taking 6000 level courses, as most of these courses are meant for PhD students and are heavily research oriented and many have a seminar type format. If there is a course that you really want to take, please make sure that you get it cleared by the faculty who is teaching that 6000 level course, and ensure that you fully understand the expectation related to the course. 5- If a 5000 level course has an undergraduate prerequisite, you should consult the faculty who teaches the course to make sure you have the appropriate background to take the course. MEng CS Final Exam Instructions

Dear MEng CS students, This email is intended for students who are graduating in Fall 2021. If you are not graduating, you can review for future reference. All Graduate students must schedule a final exam/evaluation in the VT Graduate School Approval System (ESS). Virginia Tech will NOT CONFER YOUR DEGREE if you do not schedule a final exam/evaluation. The MEng CS program does not have a final exam. What you are actually scheduling is an administrative trigger to the Graduate School to review your record for graduation. For MEng CS students the final evaluation is for degree verification purposes only. Please do NOT report in person at the scheduled time. Please follow the attached instructions to schedule your final exam/evaluation in the VT ESS system. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to return email. BLACKSBURG STUDENT MUST USE THESE OPTIONS AS WELL (even though it references a Northern VA Center room). If you are pursuing a simultaneous degree, then you must submit a Request to Admit Candidate to Final Examination form.
