This week's Graduate Seminar Speaker will be one of our new faculty, Dan Williams. This will be Friday at 2:30 in Torgersen 2150, and Zoom https://virginiatech.zoom.us/j/88134583118?pwd=ZlJCaXhYMm5XenB1bEgzOCtNdUY1… . *Title:* KASLR in the age of MicroVMs *Abstract: *Emerging cloud computing models like serverless are driving the development of virtualization architectures that are both lightweight and well-isolated. In this talk, I will highlight the key to fast VM boot times---removing guest self-bootstrapping code---but also the hidden dangers of losing security features when doing so. Specifically, I will show how kernel address space layout randomization (KASLR) has been inadvertently discarded for the sake of fast boot in AWS Firecracker and how a novel approach of in-monitor randomization can provide this feature without the overheads of self-bootstrapping. *Bio:* Dan Williams recently joined Virginia Tech as an Assistant Professor after 10 years as a Research Staff Member at IBM Research. His research interests center around operating systems and virtualization usually in a cloud security context. Course Web Request

Course Web Request period opens on Tuesday, October 19, 2021. This is the time when you can request classes for the Spring 2022 semester. For more information on the Course Request process and how it works, please see this page and video: https://www.universitystudies.vt.edu/how-to/hdi-course-request.html. Please note that the language on the site and the video has a slant towards an undergraduate audience, but the process is still the same for graduate students. Please be sure to enroll in an in-person course for your respective campus first (i.e., Blacksburg or National Capital Region) prior to enrolling in a virtual (online) course. You can determine what is considered an in-person course by looking at the modality column in the Timetable of Classes (hint: look for face-to-face instruction as the modality). If you choose a virtual course prior to enrolling in an in-person campus course, then your campus will revert to virtual and you will not be able to enroll in in-person campus classes until your campus has been changed. Please enroll in an in-person campus course prior to enrolling in virtual courses so that your campus does not revert to virtual. Remember, Blacksburg students should sign up for a Blacksburg course and then virtual courses as needed. Northern Virginia students should sign up for Northern Virginia courses and then virtual courses as needed. You will also be able to enroll in courses during the Web Drop/Add period which begins on Friday, November 26, 2021. The Force Add form will open shortly after that date. This will be Friday at 2:30 in Torgersen 2150, and Zoom https://virginiatech.zoom.us/j/88134583118?pwd=ZlJCaXhYMm5XenB1bEgzOCtNdUY1… . *Title:* Lessons from the edge: what next generation networks can learn from rural connectivity *Abstract:* Despite significant increases in availability of Internet connectivity globally, hundreds of millions of people today are unable to access the Internet, the consequences of which have come into sharp focus in recent years. In this talk, I’ll present my research building systems to provide communications service effectively and sustainably to underserved communities, with examples from deployments in rural areas of the Philippines and Indonesia. By focusing on the “edge cases'' left unserved by traditional approaches, I will demonstrate how work on rural connectivity carries important lessons for next-generation networks research. *Bio:* Shaddi Hasan is an assistant professor of computer science at Virginia Tech. His research interests lie at the intersection of networking, human-centered computing, and information and communication technologies for (global) development (ICTD). His current research centers on developing infrastructure technologies for historically underserved communities, with a focus on Internet access. Prior to Virginia Tech, he was a software engineer at Facebook Connectivity, and a co-founder at Endaga, a startup building tools for community-run cellular networks.
